Here’s what’s happening this week:
Hearing Screening – Our class will participate in the hearing screening on Tuesday, Nov. 1st.
Picture Retakes – Thursday, November 3rd is picture retake day. Say cheese!!!
Veterans’ Day – Thursday, November 10th is our Veterans’ Day Assembly at 2:45. Please email photos of your special veteran so they can be included in our school slide show. If you have a veteran that you would like to invite to the assembly, please do so, as we would be delighted to honor them for their service!!! Let’s show our gratitude and spirit by wearing red, white, and blue that day. J No School on Friday, Nov. 11th in honor of Veterans’ Day.
Conferences – Thank you so much for taking time to celebrate your child’s goals and growth so far this year. It was great meeting with you and I look forward to our continued work together!
Reading – This week, we are digging deeper into the text and illustrations to better understand the character’s point of view.
Writing – We are writing “strong beginnings” to our stories by including signal words (first, next, then, and last) and using our senses and dialogue so our readers will ‘experience’ our writing.
Math – Our class rocked the post-test for Unit One! Hooray!!! We are now on Unit Two which covers place value: hundreds, tens, and ones. We will be writing numbers in different ways. For example, 236 can be built with 2 hundreds, 3 tens, and 6 ones. Or… it can be built with 1 hundred, 13 tens and six ones. Or… 2 hundreds, 2 tens, and 16 ones. Why you ask? We want students to have a solid understanding of base 10 and the value of each place. This decomposing of the numbers really challenges and helps students to solidify their understanding of place value. Please don’t hesitate to email or call if you have questions about homework. I’m happy to walk you through this “new” way of thinking and I appreciate your support as we ask students to show their thinking in multiple ways. J We will continue to use CUBES and PLAN to solve story problems.
Science – So we just finished up exploring the properties of liquids. We are moving on to BITS AND PIECES which gives us hands on experience with combining and separating different sized solids. (Think pieces, grains, and particles.)
Spelling – Spelling list 6 went home last Friday and the test for those words will be on Friday 11/4/16. You can get extra practice by going to https://www.spellingcity.com/knorgard/. This list includes sight words, -ol- pattern words, and academic vocabulary.
Box Tops – Keep saving and sending in your box tops and labels for education. The fall drive is over, but we will have another class competition in the spring.
Hope you have a fabulous week!
