Here’s what’s happening this week:
Lost & Found – Please check the lost & found for coats, hats, backpacks, etc… Remaining items will be going to Share House over winter break.
Report Cards – Please note that report cards will be going home with students on Thursday, December 15th.
Candy Trains!!! – One of my favorite 2nd grade traditions is making candy trains. We will start at 9:45 on Friday 12/16. Each student needs to bring a full size candy bar – Snickers or Milky Way – as well as an item that they signed up for to share with the class. I will collect the candy and prepare it for train assembly. Please send in your candy as soon as possible. If you are unable to help at this time, just let me know. J We will also need at least 6 helpers that day and we’d love to have YOU!!!! Send me an email – we’d love for you to join us!
Pajama Day & Sing-Along – Be sure to wear your favorite warm pajamas to school this Friday. Just like the kids on the Polar Express, we’ll be enjoying hot cocoa as we watch this grand adventure. At 2:30, we’ll join the whole school for a sing-along before heading off for winter break.
Reading – This week we will focus on determining the main idea and supporting details in a non-fiction text passage. How does the author show us the BIG IDEA and then support that with smaller details?
Writing – We are learning how to write a paragraph that includes a topic sentence, three detail sentences, and a closing sentence.
Math - Students are finishing up the Unit 2 assessment on place value and measuring. We’ll finish off the year with CUBES and PLAN and how we can show our thinking when solving word problems. Thinking on paper might include work on a number line, place value blocks, or a picture.
Social Studies – We’ll continue our study of different kinds of communities – urban, rural, and suburban. Students will make observations on how different communities affect the experiences of the people living there. How is living in an urban community different than living in a rural community?
Spelling – Due to our crazy weather and fun snow days, we will continue with Week 10 words. The test for those words will be on Thursday 12/15/16. You can get extra practice by going to https://www.spellingcity.com/knorgard/. This list includes sight words, long –ea pattern, and academic vocabulary.
Plastic – Please send in any plastic bags or wrapping for our school-wide plastic drive!
Box Tops – Keep saving and sending in your box tops and labels for education. The fall drive is over, but we will have another class competition in the spring.
Family Game Night – Due to the weather, Family Game Night has been rescheduled for Friday, January 13th. Mark your calendars now for an evening of fun and games!
Hope you have a fantastic week and a magnificent winter break filled with family and fun!
See you on January 3rd!!
